Librarian and Media Resourcer [South Africa]


 

Applications from suitably qualified candidates are invited for a full time LIBRARIAN & MEDIA RESOURCER to offer academic and research support to staff and learners. This position commences July 2023.

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

· Diploma or Degree in Library Sciences and Information Studies

· Minimum of 2 years experience as a Librarian

THE SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE WILL HAVE:

  • Knowledge & experience of Media Centre/Library, e-Library Administration & resource management
  • The ability to teach and work with teenagers and young adults
  • A passion for developing a love of reading and acquiring knowledge
  • The ability to manage Media Centre facilities & events
  • The ability to liaise and coordinate with Management; teachers & other school functional areas to achieve Media resource goals
  • Experience in a variety of Media, including written, visual and auditory is essential
  • Experience in using information technology in a media space and research skills
  • An enthusiastic, collaborative and dynamic approach to the school environment
  • Knowledge of current trends in academic librarianship
  • A drive to make the library the hub of up-to-date information by linking subject departments in the school to accessible sources (libraries, institutions, etc.) as well as current knowledge sites online

· Provide guidance and support to school staff by working collaboratively.

· Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to work as part of a team

· Promote research support activities

· Promote the library resources and services

· ICT fluency in relation to communication, presentation and formatting of information

· Commitment to service and improving library user experience

· Knowledge and understanding of the research process and methodology

· Assistance with textbook issue/ return, textbook procurement & other areas as required

KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS:

· Responsible for acquiring, organizing, managing and distributing library resources and ensuring that library provision meets the needs of all its users

· Manage, organize, evaluate and disseminate information, providing support to teachers and learners.

· Assist learners with academic searches

· Provide media and support services

· Enforce library rules, policies and procedures and take appropriate action if need be

· Liaise with book sales people

· Ensure well stocked and resourceful library

· Issuing and collection of library books and following up on overdue books

· Booklist and book maintenance

· The control and formulation of the Library budget

· Computerising of library stock.

· Facilitate classes as well as events eg. Open Day, Battle of the Books, competitions, etc.

· Adhere to the School’s protocols

· Undertake Continuous Professional Development (CPD)

· Maintain a sound administrative system

· Arrange speakers and teachers e.g. authors, hobbyists and subject related professionals e.g. marine scientist, eco builders, etc.

· Developing a Maker Space in the library where community members can teach learners crafts and skills

ADVANTAGEOUS

ü Registration with the South African Council for Educators (SACE)

ü Member of the Library and Information Association of South Africa (LIASA)
